Eating meat, even in small quantities, can kill you | Chronic

The consumption of red or processed meat, even in very small quantities, not exceeding 50 grams per day, may increase the risk of death, whatever the cause, especially cardiovascular diseases.

Researchers from Loma Linda University studied a sample of 96,000 men and women of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, a Christian-Protestant congregation whose members are usually vegetarian or eat little meat.

This allowed us to focus research on a little explored scientific gap, such as that of an insignificant consumption of meat: 90% of those studied consumed 50 grams or less per day.

In the study, the cause of death of more than 7,900 people over 11 years was evaluated. Nearly 2,600 of these deaths were due to cardiovascular disease and more than 1,800 to various types of cancer.

Processed meats have not been considered separately for premature mortality since the proportion consuming only this type of animal protein is very low. But, badociated with red meat, they were badociated with a high risk of premature death.

"Our results corroborate existing indications, suggesting that consumption of red and processed meats can have negative effects on health and longevity", commented one of the co-authors of the study, the doctor of medicine Michael Orlich.
