At least eight people died in shooting in the US city of Indianapolis, last night, featuring a gunman who likely committed suicide after the attack, police said. All of the victims were found at a FedEx company facility near the city’s international airport, where a gunman opened fire, police spokeswoman Genae Cook told reporters.
According to local television reports, a factory worker saw the assailant armed when he started shooting. “I saw the guy with a machine gun or an automatic rifle, and he started shooting in the open air. I immediately crouched down, I was scared “Said Jeremiah Miller.
According to the police spokesperson, the gunman committed suicide. For his part, a representative of the company FedEx confirmed to AFP that his factory had been the scene of a shooting, and specified that they were collaborating with the authorities. “We are aware of the tragic shooting that took place at our plant near the Indianapolis airport,” the company said in a statement. This factory employs more than 4,000 people, according to information published in the press.
Timothy Boillat, another worker at the facility, told WISH-TV he witnessed the shooting and saw around 30 police vehicles arrive at the scene. “After hearing the gunshots, I saw a body on the ground,” he said. “Fortunately, it was quite far and [el agresor] he didn’t see me, ”he added.
The incident follows other mass shootings in recent weeks in the United States. At the end of last month, four people, including a child, were shot and killed in an office building in Southern California. On March 22, ten people were killed in a shooting at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado.
Almost 40,000 people die each year in the United States from gunshots, and more than half are suicides. President Joe Biden this month announced six measures to contain the “epidemic” which he says is gun violence in the country. The president presented a limited plan to prevent the spread of so-called “ghost weapons” – handcrafted, sometimes with 3D printers – which are impossible to trace if used in a crime.
He also proposed increasing regulation for armrests designed to stabilize the weapon, a device used by the suspect during the Colorado shooting. Biden said his proposals are just a starting point and called on Congress to legislate for measures such as background checks and ending the sale of assault rifles which are often the weapon used in mass shootings.
