Eight killed in shootout against US courier company

The event was condemned by President Joe Biden and ordered flags to be lowered to half the staff in public buildings.

Five people were hospitalized after the attack, one of them seriously injured, while two others were treated and released, police spokeswoman Genae Cook added.

“Too many Americans die from gun violence every day,” Biden said in a statement.

The president ordered that the flags be lowered to half the staff at the White House and all U.S. government buildings as a sign of mourning.

“Today’s report is just the latest in a series of tragedies,” said Biden, who cited recent deadly shootings in the states of Georgia, Colorado and South Carolina.

Regarding the Indianapolis incident, a man who works at the FedEx factory told a local television station that he saw the gunman when he started shooting.

“I saw the individual with a machine gun or automatic rifle, and he started shooting in the open. I immediately dodged, I was afraid,” Jeremiah Miller said as quoted by the news agency. AFP.

According to the police spokesperson, the attacker committed suicide.

The shooter was not immediately identified and investigators are conducting interviews and gathering information.

It is the latest in a series of mass shootings this week at a school in southern Tennessee and at an office building in Los Angeles, California.

Timothy Boillat, another employee of the plant where around 4,000 people work, told the channel WISH TV that he witnessed the shooting and saw about 30 police vehicles arriving at the scene.

“After hearing the shots, I saw a body on the ground. Fortunately, it was quite far away and [el agresor] he didn’t see me, ”he added.

Biden this month announced six measures to contain what he called an “epidemic” of gun violence in the country.

The president presented a limited plan to prevent the spread of so-called “ghost weapons”, handcrafted, sometimes with 3D printers, which are impossible to trace if used in a crime.

He also proposed increasing regulations for armrests intended to stabilize the weapon, a device the suspect used to kill a dozen people last month at a supermarket in Colorado.

Biden said his proposals are just a starting point and called on Congress to legislate for measures such as background checks and ending the sale of assault rifles which are often the weapon used in mass shootings.
