Cuba once again received international support on Wednesday during the vote of the United Nations General Assembly against the American blockade of their country: they voted only against the United States and Israel. In this context, a campaign was launched on social networks under the hashtag #ElMundoDiceQueNo, in support of the country of Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.
“The peoples of all latitudes of the planet accompany us today in our fight against the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States”, declared Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Minister of Foreign Relations of Cuba, via his Twitter. It accompanied the publication of a campaign video.
In the post, he released a video in which citizens of different countries are seen, such as Australia, Germany, Algeria, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Spain, Ethiopia, Italy, Vietnam, France, Switzerland, Greece, Iran, Jamaica, Japan, Lebanon, Namibia, Nicaragua, Palestine, South Africa, Venezuela, Turkey, China and even the United States, with a poster against the blockade, with the hashtag #ElMundoDiceNo.
From official social media, the Cuban Foreign Ministry said that “the international community will speak out against the criminal blockade of the United States” and that “the psychological impact of the bloc in the context of the coronavirus far exceeds any figure “.
President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez explained that “today Cuba returns to the podium of the General Assembly. There is a lot of abuse to report and truth to tell. We are not asking, we are demanding the lifting of the blockade. and the world knows it. “.
In addition, international leaders have joined in supporting the movement. Samuel Moncada, Permanent Representative of Venezuela to the UN, demanded “that the United States government end its colonial aggression and comply with its obligations under international law.”
Cuban Ambassador to Argentina Pedro Pablo Prada assured that “Argentina United demands it too, they may not want to hear it but they know that the blockade is also a virus and that it kills us. we will not surrender “.
For his part, Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, assured that the blockade has caused much damage to the Cuban economy and that it supports peace and dialogue. His Russian counterpart, Vasili Nebenzia, said that “all of Washington’s unilateral measures against Cuba limit Cuban and American citizens”.
Evo Morales, via his official Twitter account, declared that “the US government imposes sanctions on countries, plans coups d’état, encourages racism and maintains, since February 7, 1962, an unjust economic and inhuman blockade against Cuba. , which has not ceased even in times of the global pandemic. No to the criminal blockade. “
The vote on the draft resolution “The need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba” was due to take place in 2020, however, due to the pandemic, it had to be postponed.
Since 1992, there have been 28 votes on the issue, and in all of them the international community has expressed its rejection of the blockade. In the 2019 vote, the draft resolution received the support of 187 votes in favor, and only three against (United States, Israel and Brazil) and two abstentions (Colombia and Ukraine).
The blockade of Cuba
The American embargo was imposed in February 1962 by the government of John Kennedy, and tightened several times. But for 59 years, he has failed to overthrow the Cuban government.
It was passed into law and only the US Congress can stop it. For this reason, the opening and restoration of diplomatic relations promoted in 2016 by then-US President Barack Obama did not mean the end of the blockade.
Later, Donald Trump again declared Cuba as the sponsor state of terrorism and imposed around 250 new sanctions against Cuba. Current US President Joe Biden, who as Obama’s vice president participated in the policy of rapprochement with Cuba, has not rescinded any sanctions imposed by Trump since he came to the White House in January.
In turn, in March, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said “a change in policy towards Cuba is not currently one of President Biden’s highest priorities.”
