Last week they reported around 4 million infections coronavirus around the world: These encouraging data from the World Health Organization mark the first major drop in new cases in more than two months. In recent weeks, some 4.4 million new cases of COVID-19 have been recorded.

All regions of the world have experienced a decline infections compared to the previous week, the United Nations health agency said in its weekly update on Tuesday.

Although the global death toll has fallen to around 62,000, with the largest drop in Southeast Asia, there has been a 7% increase in deaths in Africa. The largest numbers of cases have been recorded in the United States, Britain, India, Iran and Turkey, and the contagious delta variant of the virus has already been identified in 180 countries.

Children and adolescents continue to be less affected by COVID-19 than adults, the WHO noted. Deaths of children under 24 from the disease account for less than 0.5% of deaths worldwide.

The WHO had previously said immunizing children against COVID-19 should not be a priority given the extreme shortage of vaccines around the world.
