Austria started today the strictest quarantine of those applied so far in Europe by the second wave of coronavirus by shutting down all non-essential schools and businesses, in an effort to contain an upsurge in infections that has racked up nearly 6,000 new positives in the past 24 hours.
The central European country hit its worst daily record on November 13, when over 9,500 cases in 24 hours, as authorities confirmed a seven-day incidence rate of 564 diagnoses per 100,000 population, a figure unprecedented since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic earlier this year.
Until today, Austria has accumulated 213972 cases, while 1887 people died (58 more than Monday) according to the latest report published by the health authorities and reported by the local media.
The government of Sebastian kurz announced this weekend the measures which entered into force on Tuesday and which, in principle, will last three weeks, i.e. until December 6.
Citizens should stay at home in general, except to go to work if they cannot exercise at home, take basic trips and exercise. The measure also includes distance education at all levels, although authorities have suggested that students can go to class if they don’t have spaces or technology at home, as well as if their parents or guardians can’t work remotely.
The executive defended these new restrictions as needed. The Minister of Health, Rudolf Anschober, admitted that a peak in hospitalization is expected in the last week of November, resulting from the rebound in infections in recent days, according to the Dpa news agency.
