Excessive violence in Cali: two protesters killed by CTI agent, who was later lynched

In the midst of a blockade that was recorded in the La Luna sector in the city of Cali, a man who allegedly tried to cross this point unsheathed a gun and shot several of the protesters who were there. Two of them lost their lives.

In the midst of the chaos, the person who shot fled and was chased by the same protesters who managed to arrest and lynch him.

“The fight brought this crazy situation of death and pain. We cannot allow these circumstances to continue to occur in Cali. We must not fall into the temptation of violence and death. On the contrary, justice and dialogue are two concepts which must function and which are complementary ”said the mayor of Cali, Jorge Iván Ospina.

In the videos circulating on social media, you can see the papers the lynched man was carrying and identifying him as Fredy Bermúdez Ortiz member of the CTI of the prosecution. The body was left lying in one of the streets in the area and witnesses say they want to set it on fire. Officials from the Ombudsman’s Office have already arrived at the scene, waiting for the CTI to recover the body.

Jhon Freddy Encinales Lota, section director of the public prosecutor’s office in Cali, said the events occurred on the morning of this Friday in a blockade that has remained since April 28 in La Luna. Without going into more detail, the official said that the agent Fredy Bermudez he was the victim of the crime of homicide.

“As part of the articulated work carried out by the mayor’s office and coordinated by the national police, we carried out humanitarian activities in order to recover the corpse of our colleague”Said Encinales. Regarding the reasons why the agent was attacked by the demonstrators, the director of the prosecutor assured that they were investigating what had happened a few minutes before the lynching of the head of the CTI.

The Attorney General of the Nation, Francisco Barbosa, confirmed the facts in a statement to the media hours later. “He was an official attached to the technical investigative body who, according to information gathered so far, shot several people causing the death of some civilians. It should be noted that this official joined the institution in 2014 and that at the material time he was not doing any work specific to his function because he was at rest “.

Likewise, he explained that Bermúdez, on the occasion of what happened, “was found dead at the hands of people who were in the area of ​​the events. The Attorney General’s office rejects all acts of violence that threaten the lives of our citizens regardless of their condition, these acts violate the rule of law, the Constitution and international human rights treaties ”.

The case has already been delegated to a prosecutor in court who is a human rights expert, Barbosa confirmed.
