Like every afternoon on this day, Paweł Kałuziak went for a walk with his dog, Gucio, along a wooded path near his home in Poland. It was a path they both knew well, so the dog had the freedom to walk off a leash to freely explore and soak up the smells and stimuli of nature. AND, If he used to move away from his human a bit and come back for a few minutes to continue walking together, that February day, he didn’t.
A few minutes passed and Kałuziak began to worry. “He always comes back when I call him. But that afternoon when I looked for him I called out his name and made the sounds he recognizes, he didn’t come back. He continued to search for hours, but his dog was nowhere to be found.
Gucio’s unsigned days quickly turned into weeks. Despite Kałuziak’s constant search, there was no sign of his four-legged friend. He warned the neighbors, alerted the police and even posted posters around. He wasn’t going to rest until his dog was safe at home. “I never gave up the hope of finding Gucio. But it had been so long since I had already given up. “
However, what Kałuziak didn’t know – let alone imagine – was that his dog was trapped in a place from which he had no way of escaping. Without looking for it, Gucio found himself in a kind of dead end that was putting his life in danger. With no food and no way to get home, his days were numbered until, overnight, his luck changed completely.
More than a month had passed since Gucio disappeared. It was March and fate wanted the same path Gucio had chosen for his last accompanied walk, the same one Diego had chosen, a Jack Russell Terrier, who quickly sensed something caught his eye.
Suddenly, in the middle of the walk, Diego began to pull his leash insistently, which finally led his human to a deep hole hidden in the landscape. And there was Gucio, so weak and exhausted he didn’t even have the strength to bark anymore. Diego had found it just in time.
There was no time to waste. Diego’s human ran home to find a ladder. He went down to where Gucio was, took him gently in his arms and immediately brought him home to give him first aid, feed him and put him to safety. Once inside, he could soon see that the animal he had rescued was the same one Kałuziak was desperately looking for, so he contacted him to share the good news..
“At first I couldn’t believe it. When I went to his house and saw Gucio, I started to shake. I fell to my knees and gave him a hug. It was the happiest day of my life. “According to calculations made later by Kałuziak, Gucio was probably trapped in the hole for 32 days, surviving thanks to the snowmelt. Unable to feed herself, she lost weight and was weak but eventually returned home.
“I missed him so much. For me, it was the same as missing a member of my family ”. Today, Gucio continues to gain strength. And he stays in touch with Diego, who helped him escape his long experience in the hole. Gucio and Diego are now friends and like to play in the afternoons outside. Gucio got a second chance and gained a new friend in the process. “They have fun together. And I, with Gucio at home, I’m a happy man again ”.
