Felipe Solá met with the Secretary of State to design a strategy for the release of political prisoners in Nicaragua

Alberto Fernández assumed that the Sandinista dictatorship violated the basic principles of democratic coexistence and designed a roadmap that envisages the immediate release of political prisoners and the guarantee of free elections to ensure that the opposition presidential candidates can compete on equal terms with the dictators Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo who intend to perpetuate themselves in power until the end of 2027.

In this context, Felipe Solá held a video conference with Antony Blinken, Secretary of State to Joseph Biden. Foreign Minister Solá discussed with Secretary Blinken Alberto Fernández the predisposition to reach a multilateral consensus that would allow the immediate release of political prisoners locked up by the Ortega-Murillo marriage. and simultaneously the negotiation of a roadmap between the dictatorship and the opposition leading to transparent elections, without proscriptions and controlled by international observers.

The presidential strategy does not imply an automatic alignment with the regional agenda of the White House. Alberto Fernández does not agree with the financial economic sanctions that the Treasury Department has issued against Nicaragua and its political nomenclature, and considers that the best way is to convene a dialogue table between the parties endorsed by the international community.

The head of state raised this complex geopolitical question with Pedro Sánchez, and does not exclude adding Portugal, France and Mexico to force the Sandinista regime to end the raids in Managua and order the immediate release of the four presidential candidates he has detained in recent days.

Ortega and Murillo have led a coordinated repressive movement against the opposition that demands transparency and freedom to reach the presidential elections on November 7. This repressive movement involved the arrest of Cristiana Chamorro, Juan Sebastián Chamorro, Felix Maradiaga and Arturo Cruz, all accused of alleged treason and money laundering.

Nicaraguan dictatorial marriage has no evidence against Cristiana Chamorro, Juan Sebastián Chamorro, Maradiaga and Cruz, that they were claiming to be presidential candidates in the next election. It is an illegal armed group to put an end to the politico-institutional resistance to the Sandinista regime, which is under the gaze of the international community.

From this perspective, Alberto Fernández considers that the participation of the United States is essential in an institutional process which should – in principle – force the release of Nicaraguan presidential candidates detained without proof or legitimate procedure.

Blinken coincided with Solá’s gaze, and the State Department maintains that it has all diplomatic possibilities on the table to close this authoritarian cycle in Nicaragua which began in 2007 and which saw its most dramatic example with the massacre ordered and executed by Ortega and Murillo in 2018.

On Tuesday there will be a very important meeting at the Organization of American States (OAS) to address the institutional crisis in Nicaragua, and a principle of coincidence between the positions that the Rose House and the White House will present cannot be ruled out.

Alberto Fernández does not believe a word in Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the OAS, But he decided to use all multilateral scenarios to advance a geopolitical agenda that could bind Argentina to the United States and the European Union.

In fact, the president spoke about the crisis in Nicaragua with Pedro Sánchez and a day later, the socialist leader endorsed a public document demanding the freedom of political prisoners held by the Sandinista regime.

And some time before he will have a dialogue with Solá, Blinken had a conversation with Spain’s Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya. During this diplomatic contact, the Secretary of State also addressed the excesses of the Sandinista dictatorship. In foreign policy, coincidences do not exist.
