The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez today expressed his condolences to President Alberto Fernández for the death of Diego Maradona, and stressed that he was a “dear and faithful friend of Fidel” Castro.

“On behalf of the Cuban people and government, and of Army General Raúl Castro Ruiz, I offer my deepest condolences on the death of Diego Armando Maradona, a dear and loyal friend of Fidel and our people,” said the letter from the President of Cuba, published this morning by Fernández on his Twitter account.

“I beg you to extend them to your family and friends. Fraternally,” concludes the brief letter from the Cuban president.

Maradona met and befriended Fidel Castro, who also died on November 25, during his visit to that country in 2000, as part of his recovery from drug addiction.
