For second day in a row, Cuba hits record number of COVID-19 deaths

For the second day in a row, Cuba scored a new high in one-day deaths with 67 deaths, which brings death toll to 1,726 since March last year when the pandemic started in the Caribbean country. The previous death record had been reported the day before with 51 deaths, according to information released daily by the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap).

Health authorities notified this Thursday 6,479 positive for SARS-Cov-2 with which the country already has 263,086 infections. In the laboratories, 45,721 samples were processed to detect the day’s cases, of which 56 were imported.

In hospitals and isolation centers they are admitted 66,517 people: 41,559 active cases -129 critical and 118 serious-, 17,368 with suspicious symptoms and the rest under epidemiological surveillance.

The complex epidemiological situation of the country was one of the factors that led to the anti-government protests Sunday, what they left a dead Yes hundreds of inmates, according to independent civil society organizations.

In areas at risk, including the capital, a health intervention study with Abdala and Soberana 02, the two most advanced formulas of the five developed by Cuba against the coronavirus.

The first, which has shown an efficacy of 92.2% in clinical trials –according to regime reports-, has received emergency use authorization and is the first Latin American vaccine against the coronavirus.

Soberana 02, for its part, is awaiting this authorization after showing an efficacy of 91.2% with two doses and an additional dose of Soberana More, another of the compounds scientists on the island are studying.

Over a million Cubans, from 11.2 million of the total population, have received at least one dose of these formulas as part of the clinical tests Yes intervention studies developed in parallel with sanitary.

Cuba does not integrate the mechanism The WHO Covax was created so that low- and middle-income countries could access vaccines, and it also did not purchase them on the international market.
