For the third week in a row, global coronavirus cases have fallen

Global cases of coronavirus during the week of September 20-26 were 3.3 million, which supposes a 10% drop compared to the previous seven days, according to the epidemiological report published periodically by the World Health Organization (WHO).

All regions have seen declines, although in Europe, where there are still over a million weekly infections, the drop was only 1%, while in the rest of the continents it was about 15% decrease in infections.

The same 10% drop was seen last week in deaths from COVID-19, which were 55,830 worldwide, marking the fourth consecutive weekly decrease and the biggest drop in deaths since June.

Africa was the exception, as deaths rose 5% last week (however, in absolute numbers it was the region with the fewest deaths, 2,500), while in Europe the decline was also modest, 1% (14,000 deaths) and in South and East Asia the fall was over 20%.

Regarding the accumulation since the start of the pandemic, at least 232 million infections of COVID-19, of which 4.7 million have died.

Last week, the United States remained the country with the most new cases, with 765,000, although the figure is a 31% less than the previous weekly period.

It was followed by Brazil, with 247,000 infections (more than double the previous week, due to changes in methodology), the UK with 230,000 (14% more) and India, with 204,000 new positives.

Regarding the vaccination campaign, and on the basis of information provided by the health networks in each country, the 6.2 billion doses administered on the planet, at the current rate of 25.77 million daily vaccinations.

44.8% of the world’s population has received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, although this percentage drops to 2.3% for low-income countries.
