Former Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez has died – News

The former president died this Sunday at dawn at his home, while he decided to stay with his family in the Prado district in Montevideo.

The Vázquez Delgado family released an official statement and announced that there would be no public awakening due to the health emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The funeral procession will leave at 1:00 p.m. from the esplanade of the municipal administration of Montevideo to the cemetery of La Teja according to the following route: Av.18 de Julio, Rio Negro street, Av. Libertador, Av. De las Leyes (bypass Legislative Palace), Av. Agraciada, Av. Carlos María Ramírez.

While the burial will take place in the cemetery of La Teja, during an intimate ceremony reserved for children and grandchildren. “We urge the population to accompany these acts from their homes with journalistic coverage,” the letter said.

The former president, who led the Eastern Republic of Uruguay for two non-consecutive terms from 2005 to 2010 and 2015 to 2020, has been sacked from the Frente Amplio.

Tabaré Vázquez, oncologist and former leader of the local football club Progreso, was the first candidate of the left-wing coalition Frente Amplio to become mayor of Montevideo in 1989 and for the presidency – after two unsuccessful attempts – in 2005, breaking with the hegemony of the traditional Colorado party and the national party.
