A group of armed men entered the Federal Mint on Tuesday in Mexico City and stole a millionaire 's booty in the safe, authorities said.
The secretary of security of the citizens of the capital, Jesus Orta Martínez, told the press channel that three of the criminals had disarmed the security guards and "went directly to the vault that was open."
The official said the attackers stole gold coins, commemorative watches and other valuables. It did not detail the amount of loot, but the local press established it at around 50 million Mexican pesos (2.5 million dollars).
The 50 pesos gold coins were minted for the first time in Mexico in 1921 to commemorate the first centennial of independence. They are currently traded by investors based on market fluctuations.
The local Attorney General's office has opened an investigation, while police sources said six people reportedly took part in the attack, reports the Mexican newspaper "El Universal".
According to this newspaper, a person was shot dead around the building without knowing for the moment if the two events are related.
The authorities said they had pictures of thieves.
