Germany delivers documents from Franz Kafka's friend to Israel – 20/05/2019

Germany will hand over to the National Library of Israel documents belonging to the heritage of the Czechoslovakian writer Max Brod, friend of the famous writer Franz Kafka: representatives of the German Federal Police (BKA) will hand over to the Embbady of Israel in Berlin some 5000 pages of private archives of Brod (1884-1968). According to the National Library, the documents were stolen in Tel Aviv ten years ago and smuggled into Germany, where they were confiscated in 2015.

Manuscripts, which include unpublished pbadages from Brod's diary and correspondence with his wife, could give a more accurate idea of ​​the life of Franz Kafka (1883-1924), said Stefan Litt, head of archiving at the National Library of Israel at dpa.

It is presumed that the documents were stolen from the apartment of the former secretary of Brod, Esther Hoffe, in Tel Aviv, and that they were offered for purchase at the archives of German literature of Marbach. After a trial in Wiesbaden, Germany, documents, notes and correspondence were attributed to the Brod estate.

Parts of Kafka's heritage, including the manuscript of the novel The process, Were auctioned for record sums. In 2016, the Supreme Court of Israel ruled that all property, including Kafka manuscripts, belonged to the National Library.

Recently, a Swiss court has decided that other documents of this inheritance that are in a safe in a Zurich bank must also be handed over to Israel.
