German customs seized 4.5 tonnes of cocaine in a container from Uruguay, a market value of around 1 000 million euros, or about 1.1 billion dollars.
The customs office in Hamburg said it seized the drug two weeks ago when it examined the container, which was heading from Montevideo to Antwerp, Belgium. The document indicated that the cargo was made of soy, but when opening the container, black sports bags appeared.
They found about 4,200 packets of cocaine in the 211 bags. It was the largest drug seizure in Germany to date.
Customs said the drug was destroyed "in the utmost secrecy and with respect to many security measures".
