As the European Commission fuels controversy over the use of Sputnik V, the German government has confirmed its intention to negotiate with Russia a bilateral agreement for the purchase of this vaccine which, so far, has proven to be one of the most effective against the coronavirus.

Although the intention was made publicly, trading will be subject to drug approval by the European drug regulatory body.

“I explained on behalf of Germany to the Council of Health Ministers of the EU (European Union) that we will have bilateral talks with Russia, to find out when and in what quantities they could deliver“Vaccines,” said Health Minister Jens Spahn.

In an interview with public broadcaster WDR, the official explained that the decision came as the European Commission announced it would not negotiate the purchase of the Sputnik V vaccine on behalf of the 27 member states, as it had done with other covid-19 vaccines.

The arguments of the European bloc are more political than health. The French foreign minister recently criticized Russia for its use as a “propaganda tool” around the world.
