Giants and Redskins select corners in additional draft

The NFL held its annual mid-summer draft on Wednesday with two selected players, the most since 2010.

New York Giants: Sam Beal, BC, Western Michigan, third round.

Washington Redskins: Adonis Alexander, BC, Virginia Tech, Sixth Round

Three Players Eligible for the Unselected Additional Draft – Brandon Bryant, SS, State of Mississippi; Bright Ugwoegbu, LB, State of Oregon; Martayveus Carter, RB, Grand Valley State – are now unidentified free agents eligible to be signed by an NFL team. The Jets are expected to sign Bryant, a source told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The collective agreement allows a player to apply for additional draft registration if he becomes eligible after the NFL draft date in the spring. The teams selecting Beal and Alexander in the additional draft lose their corresponding selection in the NFL's 2019 draft.

A little extra history before diving into the players and matches with their new clubs:

There were 21 players to do a Pro Bowl after being selected in the NFL's additional draft, by NFL Research. Four players selected in the additional draft were then introduced to the US Football Hall of Fame:

WR Cris Carter: Fourth Round Pick in 1987
DE Reggie White: 1984 First Round Pick of the Year USFL and CFL players
QB Steve Young: first-round pick in 1984, additional USFL players and the CFL
T Gary Zimmerman: first-round pick in 1984 additional USFL and CFL players

Selected in the extra draft came in 2010, when Harvey Unga (Bears) and Josh Brent (Cowboys) both participated in the seventh round. The last time three or more players were selected was 1989 (five players)

The most recent player selected in the extra draft was the offensive tackle Isaiah Battle (fifth round, Rams) who is currently with the Seattle Seahawks . Terrelle Pryor in 2011 (third round, Raiders) and Josh Gordon in 2012 (second round, Browns) are the latest choices.

Adonis Alexander, BC, Redskins : The old Virginia Tech corner has a mbadive size at 6 feet 3 inches, 207 pounds to go with a raw talent. His out-of-the-field problems (academic ineligibility and marijuana arrest) as well as some struggles on the ground have probably lowered his stock. However, some scouts of the NFL love the length and the potential press-man that its size brings to the table. Alexander lands with his new DB coach Torrian Gray in Washington. Alexander's size fits the profile of what the Redskins like in their corners. With Kendall Fuller's trade this offseason, Alexander can help fill the depth behind beginners Josh Norman and Orlando Scandrick. A six-round flyer on a player with Alexander's potential seems pretty much right.
