Five climbers Russians died today after being trapped for several hours in the Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe, due to bad weather conditions, the press service of the Russian Emergency Ministry reported.
“During the search and rescue operation, we managed to save 14 people, who were evacuated (to the base) Polyana Azau and handed over to medics,” the Russian Emergency Ministry said in a statement.
The entity said the rescuers were working “in very difficult conditions”. “The gusts of wind reached speeds of between 40 and 70 meters per second, with heavy rain of wet snow”, explained the aforementioned ministry.
According to local medical sources informed by the RIA Novosti agency, two climbers are in an intensive care unit. Among the others, three are treated in the trauma department, three others in the major burns department (due to freezing of the extremities) and one in the thoracic surgery department.
A group of 19 climbers who had climbed the Mount Elbrus, located in the western part of the Caucasus Mountains, in the Russian republic of Kabardia-Balkaria, sent a distress signal the day before, after being stranded at an altitude of 5,400 meters. The rescue operation, which involved nearly 70 rescuers and was hampered by weather conditions, ended early Friday.
The regional department of the Russian Investigation Committee has opened criminal proceedings against the organizers of the climb for providing services “without adequate security conditions which resulted in the deaths of two or more people.”
As the entity reported in a statement, the investigation established that on Thursday a group of 23 people started the ascent of Mount Elbrus, but 4 decided to return due to deteriorating weather.
During the afternoon, a strong wind raged which reduced visibility to a meter, with temperatures below -20 degrees Celsius. According to the researchers’ version, the group was divided into two parts by decision of the guides. The cause of death for the five climbers was hypothermia, the investigating committee noted.
