General Motors will lay off 14,700 plant and board employees in the United States and Canada and investigate the closure of five plants as part of a restructuring process to reduce costs and focus more on electric vehicles and autonomous.
The reduction concerns 8,100 administrative staff, some of whom will accept voluntary redundancies, while others will be dismissed. Most of the affected factories make cars, such as the Cruze, the Volt, the Impala, the Cadillac CT6, the Buick LaCrosse and the Cadillac XTS, which will no longer be sold in North America and will not be immediately replaced .
The company has announced the development of a new family of SUVs and electric vehicles, which will take their place in the market.
