Mexico and Uruguay will take their Proposed dialogue for Venezuela to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, as they advanced this Thursday to EFE diplomatic sources.
The Mexican ambbadador to the United Nations, Juan José Gómez Camachoand the Uruguayan, Elbio Rosselli, will meet Guterres to discuss the initiative of their two governments, who wish to promote a negotiated solution to the Venezuelan crisis.
Mexico and Uruguay, which maintain a neutral position, announced Wednesday call for an international conference on February 7th discuss a diplomatic solution to the situation in Venezuela.
The initiative, according to the two countries, responds precisely to the calls made by the UN for a dialogue between the Venezuelan government and the opposition, after the head of Parliament, opposition Juan Guaidó, has proclaimed himself acting president.
"We are aware of the initiative of Mexico and Uruguay. Clearly, the international community can play a key role in facilitating inclusive agreements, "Guterres spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said Thursday.
Dujarric also confirmed that a meeting was being prepared with representatives of both countries, an appointment that will finally take place this Friday, according to diplomatic sources.
From the beginning, The UN insisted that a dialogue is needed between all relevant actors in Venezuela and stressed that it was not their competence to recognize or not recognize the chief executive, which remains in the hands of the member states.
At least 30 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and the United States, have recognized Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela, while Bolivia, Cuba, Russia or China have demonstrated their support for Maduro.
Guterres, meanwhile, offered his "good offices"to mediate between the two parties and, in the meantime, continue to collaborate with the government of Nicolás Maduro on humanitarian and development issues.
