The young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg arrived in New York after crossing the Atlantic for 14 days on the Malizia II sailing boat. Thumberg had left the port of Plymouth (United Kingdom) and anchored at Coney Island (United States).
Before arriving, Thunberg posted on his social networks a photo with the distant lights of New York with the message: "Earth, the lights of Long Island and New York are waiting for us," he said.
The young woman refused to travel by plane because of the CO2 emissions. He decided to leave the port of Plymouth on August 14th. Greta's intention is to participate in the two major global climate change marches organized for September 20th and 27th and to attend the UN Assembly on anti-corruption action. Climate Change in New York, organized by the Secretary General, Antonio Guterres. On September 23, he will deliver a speech on climate change.
His fight began on August 20, 2018, he was away from school every Friday to protest in front of the Swedish Parliament against the fight for the environment. Over the next few months, the young woman will travel across America with her message.
Given his refusal to reach the United States by air because of the significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions, Greta chose to embark on the Malizia II sailing yacht, powered by solar energy and by submarine turbines that emit no CO2.
Currently, Greta is taking a sabbatical year and will be attempting to participate in many events in North America, where she will meet some of the most affected populations by climate change and environmental emergencies, as well as political activists and policy makers. In addition, the Swedish teenager intends to travel to Canada and Mexico.
He will then travel to Chile to attend the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP25), which will be held this year from 2 to 13 December in Santiago de Chile. He also plans to visit other cities in South America that are also important to cope with the climate crisis.
Greta does not travel by plane because of the "enormous" amount of CO2 generated by air navigation and emitted directly into the atmosphere. Thus, it has opted for modes of transport less intensive in CO2 for its movements across the Americas.
Svante Thunberg, his father, and Nathan Grossman, director of B-Reel Films, will document the crossing. The ship will be led by the corridor Boris Herrmann and the founder of the Malizia team, Pierre Casiraghi, who will give their time and knowledge for the crossing of Greta across the Atlantic. The trip was organized jointly by Greta, Team Malizia and B-Reel Films.
The Malizia team has also developed the Malizia Ocean Challenge, a project to support climate education and CO2 monitoring in the ocean. The project is supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, an organization responsible for environmental and climate projects.
Before leaving, Thunberg said that in his opinion, the events in New York and Santiago de Chile would show that, during all these months, world leaders have listened to science and young people around the world who have raised against climate change and the meteorological emergency.
"I will be there, even if the journey is too long and difficult, we will make our voices heard, it is the way of our future and we should at least be able to say something there." Science is clear and we all young and children, we communicate and act like this united science, and we ask that the world be united behind this science, "he said.
