Hawks offered the No. 3 choice, Kent Bazemore to the Cavaliers in the repechage

The Hawks traded choice # 3 (Luka Doncic) to the Mavericks for choice # 5 (Trae Young) and a future first-round pick.

But, Atlanta apparently also explored the use of No. 3 choose to unload Kent Bazemore (two years, $ 37,359,549 remaining).

Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com:

A source said that the Cavs were offered to the repechage the chance to trade up to No. 3 with the Hawks in a case that allegedly sent Kent Bazemore at Cleveland

Presumably the Cavaliers would have sent out choice # 8 – which they used on Sexton's Collin – in Atlanta.

But, with or without choice # 8, this trade would not have satisfied the wage cap rules. Cleveland should have sent a matching salary.

So, what else was included? Did the Hawks want Kevin Love? Would they have taken George Hill or J.R. Smith, whose salaries for 2019-2020 – unlike Bazemore – are only partially guaranteed?

We obviously do not know any offer, which opens up even more questions about what Atlanta wanted. The Hawks have the 2019 first-round pick of the Cavaliers. Has the withdrawal of these protections been taken into account in the commercial offer?

The Hawks seemed to have picked Young, and when they got down to No. 5, they made sure to get it. That would not have been the case at # 8 with Magic (# 6) and Bulls (# 7) in between. So, not only is the exact supply not clear, but also the potential contingencies on which it rested. Perhaps, Atlanta would have chosen Doncic then executed the case only if Young fell to number 8.

Could Cleveland have got Doncic to take the overpaid, but still useful, Bazemore? Maybe – but it's an oversimplification.
