A 19-year-old British girl reported that 12 Israeli tourists they raped her when he was on vacation on the island of Cyprus. But the case took a turn, and the victim became a perpetrator and ended up in detention. The case remains immersed in an intense legal battle in which the suspects, sons of senior Israeli officials, are involved.
The complaint was known in July 2019 but it is far from over. At that time, a 19-year-old girl who was vacationing on the island reported that he was sexually abused by a group of 12 Israelis, aged 15 to 22, who were also visiting the area.
Although the case began to be investigated, the young woman surprisingly retracted the complaint. According to international media, the retraction became known after it was subjected to an exhaustive interrogation in which there had been coercion, his lawyer was not present and there was no British translator. This questioning ended when the young woman admitted to having falsified the complaint.
For this reason, the 12 Israelis, some of whom are the children of senior officials, were released and returned to their country. But the young woman’s situation continued to get complicated. After the alleged assailants were released, the country’s justice system ordered her arrest for four weeks and after that they forced her to stay on the island.
They found her guilty of false testimony, but her family appealed and an intense legal battle ensued trying to overturn the conviction against the young woman and continue the investigation into the abuse.
Meanwhile, protests in favor of the young woman have spread across the world. The protests are primarily aimed at the judge handling the case, whom they accuse of rejecting statements without cause and responding to a patriarchal justice system.
