The Speaker of the Parliament of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, who was proclaimed interim president of the country a month ago, said Saturday that the first shipment of humanitarian aid to Venezuelan territory had arrived from Brazil despite the closure of the border ordered by the government of Nicolás Mature
"We officially announced that the first shipment of humanitarian aid has now entered our border with Brazil"Guaidó said on Twitter.
The second of the vehicles is also expected to reach the border this Saturday, after encountering technical problems during the 220-kilometer journey that separates the city of Boa Vista, capital of the state of Roraima (north) and Pacaraima.
Hundreds of Venezuelans are witnessing the arrival of Brazil's first humanitarian aid consignment amid cries against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan army's request to open the way, according to Efe.
Among the cheers of those present, the truck stopped about 300 meters from the entrance to Venezuela, where some 20 Venezuelan armies, equipped with anti-riot equipment, monitor the crossing of the border and prevent pbadage.
The Brazilian authorities, accompanied by patrols of the Federal Highway Police, escorted the vehicle driven by a Venezuelan to the border between the two countries.
The arrival of this first cargo has thus become a kind of political message since in Boa Vista, the others are still waiting for about 200 tons of food and medicine that Brazil has collected in cooperation with the United States.
One of the conditions of the Brazilian government for the transfer of humanitarian aid from Boa Vista to the Caribbean nation is that it is performed by "Venezuelan trucks, driven by Venezuelans".
Up to now, only two trucks carrying the plates A05AI5N and A64AI5N, both of the Venezuelan state of Monagas, have been registered, according to Efe.
During the transfer from Boa Vista to Pacaraima, the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ernesto Araújo, and staff of the US Embbady were present.
Maduro refuses to accept the aid collected in Brazil and Colombia and has closed the border that he shares with both countries in order to prevent their entry.
The humanitarian aid was requested by the Speaker of the Parliament of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, proclaimed last January to the presidency of that country while he considered Maduro as a "usurper" of the executive power.
Guaidó has been recognized by some 50 countries, including the United States and Brazil.
Araújo said this Saturday in statements to Efe that Maduro "has no real power", "nor does he have any moral power, he only has the power to brute force ".
He also said that "Venezuela was living a moment of irreversible change" and asked the "Venezuelan army" to support Guaidó.
"The fall of Maduro is a matter of time," he said.
