His name is Babis Anagnostopoulos, he is Greek, a helicopter pilot and murdered his English sponge Caroline Crouch.
The 33-year-old, after killing his 20-year-old wife, put on a whole stage and supported a story for a month, even on TV channels, but it all fell apart.
Finally, he admitted his crime and the indignation against him is unmatched.
Crime scene
Anagnostopoulos is now indicted, admitting to having murdered Caroline in early May.
For more than a month, he claimed that his wife was killed in a violent robbery at their home in Glyka Nera, on the outskirts of Athens. The pilot appeared on national television telling his “version” of what happened, which they published in Greece.
Caroline was British and grew up in Greece. She was found dead in her bedroom on May 11, following a complaint from her husband, who called the police. She said she was strangled by foreign thieves who broke into her property, tied the couple up and threatened to kill her baby, after which they fled with $ 18,000.
“I can’t describe it. […] I hope that doesn’t happen to anyone else, ”Anagnostopoulos later told national television, adding that he“ begged ”the thieves not to harm his family, Sky News reported.
Greece decided to offer a reward of $ 355,000 for information that would track the whereabouts of the attackers, and in the early days of the investigation, a Georgian was arrested on suspicion of being linked to the case, the BBC reported at the time.
Confession
However, soon after, officers were able to determine that Anagnostopoulos had made up the story of the theft and that he himself was responsible for the death of his wife.
A few days ago, the man admitted to suffocating Crouch to death in a scuffle in which the woman threatened to leave him and take their daughter away.
According to investigators, after murdering Crouch, Anagnostopoulos spent hours faking a robbery scene. He even placed the baby next to his dead mother, and drowned the family dog and hung his body from the railing of a staircase, to blame the “attackers” for the animal’s death, the newspaper reported. Proto Thema.
How did they find out?
The case was solved using technological devices, as a Crouch smartwatch showed that his heart had stopped beating hours before the alleged theft.
Additionally, trace data from Anagnostopoulos’ phone indicated that during the night of the crime, the man was moving around the house, contradicting his claims that he was tied to the bed the entire time. Likewise, a memory card from a home security camera was removed hours before Anagnostopoulos claimed the events had occurred, Proto Thema reports.
The pilot was arrested Thursday after attending a memorial service for his late wife.
The man confessed after an eight-hour questioning session and, according to his lawyers, expressed remorse for his actions. In addition to intentional homicide, Anagnostopoulos has been charged with animal abuse.
The Caroline Crouch case shocked Greece and received intense public scrutiny both inside and outside the country. National television interrupted coverage of Euro 2020 on Thursday to offer details of Anagnostopoulos’ confession, the BBC reported.
