President Alberto Fernández assured this Friday that Organization of American States (AEO) “As it is, it doesn’t work” and attacked his secretary, Luis Almagro, stating that he should do a “mea culpa” for “the things he did”.

The president made a harsh speech against the OAS when he participated in the virtual meeting for the second anniversary of the Puebla Group.

In addition, Fernández assured that the organization “was not a meeting place for Latin America” in recent years and that it functioned rather as “a kind of gendarmerie squad to advance on popular governments“of the region, based on the imprint former US President Donald Trump left on the organization.

“What the OAS did in Bolivia must necessarily be investigated and must necessarily be judged because there is now no doubt about what happened,” Fernández said, referring to the removal of Evo Morales, in 2019.

In November of the same year, an OAS report denounced serious irregularities in the electoral process carried out in Bolivia, where Morales had triumphed, and called for a repeat of the elections. The conflict ended with the resignation of the Bolivian president, in the midst of a deep political and social crisis and denouncing a coup.

That same week, on a trip to Peru for the accession to the presidency of Pedro CastilloFernández had also targeted the OAS for its work in the region.

In dialogue with C5N, the president affirmed that the OAS “ceased to be an organ which functions and serves Latin America”, it is therefore necessary to “recreate a new environment which better expresses” the region.

“Every day we never cease to be amazed by what is happening in the OAS under Almagro’s administration,” said Fernández.

Critique of blockages

During the Puebla Group video conference, Fernández reaffirmed that Latin America has a “moral obligation” and an “ethical duty” to rise up against the economic blockades that weigh on Cuba and Venezuela in times of the coronavirus pandemic and has assessed that states, for a “humanitarian” issue, they cannot “remain silent” in these situations.

Locks should be embarrassing those who promote them and in Latin America, there are two blockages that are maintained in the midst of the pandemic which deprive the peoples, not only of food, not only of inputs for the industry to be produced, but of medical supplies, of respirators and elementary to deal with the pandemic; on the humanitarian level, we cannot remain silent, ”he said.

When Castillo took over the presidency of Peru, Fernández claimed it was a “Breath of fresh air on the continent”, which arises from a scenario of “considerable political instability”. For this reason, he called for “to be at his side so that he can move forward without institutional risks such as those which have been experienced recently”.
