Normally, the social response to a criminal act is punishment.
This is the most common form of systematic response to an insecure event.
However, there are those who believe that the way to reduce insecurity is to investigate the social causes that cause it. In this case, the best recipe against insecurity is community participation.
Employment
That’s what a restaurateur named Carl Wallace, who lives in Augusta, Georgia, USA, thinks.
Carl leaned in for a peaceful resolution after a criminal entered his business. Instead of calling the police, the owner shared the footage with the aftermath of the theft on his Facebook account and offered the thief a job at his business.
The criminal was wearing a balaclava and was captured by the facility’s security cameras. He entered the restaurant, smashing the glass door in search of money. However, the man fled the place empty-handed, as Wallace keeps all the money in a safe deposit box.
Upon learning of the attack, the businessman urged the criminal to contact him to resolve the case.
Opportunities
“For the potential thief who is clearly struggling with life decisions or has money issues, please stop by for a job application. There are better opportunities than this path you have chosen. […] No police, no questions. Let’s sit down and talk about how we can help you and fix your way, ”Wallace wrote, adding his cell phone number.
The story has since gone viral, attracting the attention of internet users and the media. After receiving so many comments, the owner reiterated his commitment to engage the abuser, arguing that “love, kindness and forgiveness will always be a better solution than hate”.
So far, the thief has not responded to Wallace’s offer. However, the person concerned is hoping that his proposal will come true, as the arrest of the intruder will not fix his life and he could start the same mistakes all over again.
