Which in many parts of the world would have ended the other way around, not in Spain. The case has come to light in the last few hours, and it shows that the police in Zaragoza had to help a usurping woman enter the house because its owner had put a padlock at the entrance. Unusual but real. And more unusual is the end of the story and what happened to the owner.
According to the newspaper The herald, the police had to go to a building in Zaragoza last Thursday after receiving a call from a squatter who could not enter the house they had usurped long ago. The reason? Her new owner had put a padlock on the lock taking advantage of the fact that he had seen her leave the property.
Everything happened at Cerezo 40 street. When the officers arrived at the scene, the woman explained that he was occupying the floor illegally.
The problem of the “squat” has been debated for decades in Spain.
The squatter claimed that the new owner of the apartment had violently snatched his keys not long before, and that all his things had remained inside. Among them the insulin she needed since she was diabetic.
With the help of the fire brigade, it was finally possible to enter the building through a balcony. And once inside, it turned out that no one was inside the apartment and the owner put a chain with a padlock to prevent entry to the squat. Then the police cut the chain.
The woman finally entered and now the police could take legal action against the owner for coercion since under Spanish law, squatters become residents of the usurped house and no one – not even their rightful owners – can enter until they get a court order, or cut basic supplies to get them out. For that, the Police recommend to always use the legal route.
The door was locked with a padlock which could only be opened from the outside. The police did not break the padlock: they broke the chain.
The Police explained that the day before, Wednesday August 18, they had already intervened in the same building at the request of the owner, since found another squat inside and there was a strong discussion between them trying to kick him out. In addition, they reminded the owner of the National Police’s advice on what to do if squatters entered a house. Despite this, the owner ignored the authorities.
The lawyer of the owner of the apartment, Carmen Sánchez HerreroShe was outraged and after not being able to prove the attitude of the police, she clarified: “This man bought the building a few weeks ago from a bank and all he did was put chain. cannot open a building to just anyone“.
