INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION PRODUCES THE FIRST BABY PAINTED AT THE OZ NÉ OF ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION Scientific benchmark for the conservation of threatened felines On February 16, 2019 was born in the Mata Ciliar Association of Jundiaí, the first jaguar of the artificial insemination (AI) of the world. This new birth represents a great scientific progress and is the result of a project of the Brazilian Center for Conservation of Neotropical Felines developed by the Mata Ciliar Association (AMC) in partnership with the Center for Conservation and Species Research. Artificial insemination (AI) was performed with fresh semen collected from a Jaguar man residing at AMC. After 104 days of gestation, one of the jaguars selected by the project, named Bianca, gave birth to only one small. The little leopard was born healthy and vigorous and Bianca presented excellent maternal care to her little one. Unfortunately, after two days, the puppy is dead. It was not possible to know the cause of death, because before the veterinary team could perform an badysis, the dead chick had been eaten naturally by the mother. Despite the sad reality, it is not uncommon for this to happen, both in captivity and in the wild, especially among carnivores. Bianca was a mother for the first time and this may have also influenced the event. However, the birth of the baby is a very positive result for the conservation of the jaguar, which is the most threatened cat species in Brazil.
