The project which proposed a radical health reform in Colombia amid the health crisis the country is going through due to Covid-19 was one of the reasons why thousands of Colombians took to the streets and joined the strike. to show their dissatisfaction. Since April 28, through harangues, posters and even graffiti across the country, citizens and many health officials have demanded that the reform proposed by the radical change party and supported by the governing party and the Minister of Health, Fernando Ruiz, was withdrawn but unlike the reform bill, annulled by President Iván Duque, it could only be overturned by the Congress of the Republic.

So today was an important day to define the future of the health system in Colombia, because after 12 hearings, Bill 010 would be voted on by lthe joint committees of the House of Representatives and the Senate to define whether their process continues or is archived. Although according to what was stated by some parties, such as the Liberals, Conservatives, U and other allied government parties plus opposition parties, the project did not have much hope of being approved.

Even, according to Semana Magazine, the leader of Cambio Radial, Germán Vargas Lleras, had already resigned himself to the fact that the project had not succeeded and even indicated that he would insist on the project when another president arrives at the Casa de Nariño.

Therefore, before noon, it was reported that members of Congress of the Seventh Joint Senate and House Committee had reached an agreement to archive Bill 010, due to the no formal vote.

According to El País de Cali, the majority of representatives of the different political parties have expressed their desire to approve the initiative’s dossier, which is why the project is practically sunk. The vote remained as it was, 16 senators voted in favor of archiving the proposal while three representatives of Radical Change, among those Fabián Castillo and Carlos Fernando Motoa have expressed their disagreement with the plan not to go ahead.

Senator Valle del Cauca, representative of Polo Democrático Alexánder López Maya, who capitalized, was among the first members of Congress to spread the news. HEALTH REFORM FINALLY BROKEN and he mentioned that everything is the result of citizen protests that have taken place across the country.

The health reform dossier has just been approved, a new citizen victory thanks to the public and peaceful mobilization that has been advanced throughout Colombia. Only citizen pressure forced traditional parties and members of Congress to withdraw their support for this attack “López wrote on his Twitter account.
