Loran Denison was 15 weeks pregnant of her fourth child when a test revealed that the baby had the Edwards syndrome. It is a rare but very serious disease, and most babies with this disease die before or soon after birth.

However, the miracle was short-lived, as the newborn died 10 hours after childbirth. “I’m glad I spent this little time with him, but it also made the situation even more difficult. My son had a heart like a lion,” the woman said.

“When I took the first pill, they said it would stop the pregnancy, the heartbeat and everything, so we were hoping he wasn’t alive when he was born.

“They didn’t check the heart rate before inducing labor, and I wish they had. I have no words to describe how horrible it was. “

“I thought I did the hardest thing when I made the hard decision to have an abortion, but now it’s ten times worse. I just want other moms to know in case this happens to them, ”she continued.

Further, he explained that it was his partner who realized what was happening: “When my partner came to pick him up after he was born, he said ‘his heart is beating’, and they said ‘no way’.

This syndrome which led the couple to perform an abortion can lead to learning difficulties, heart, respiratory, kidney or gastrointestinal problems.

The woman assured the media that guilt has been eating her away since she found out that people with the disease had survived to age 40 and that she should have had hope.

The couple, from Blackburn, an English town north of Manchester, asked to baptize and bless the baby in hospital while he was alive. And finally, the little boy was buried on April 14.

What is Edwards Syndrome

Edwards syndrome, also known as trisomy 18, is a genetic disorder. This disorder affects the normal development of the child, since the little one who has a third copy of the material of chromosome 18, instead of the two normal copies. This syndrome occurs in 1 in 6000 births and is three times more common in girls than in boys.

Chromosomes are usually presented in pairs. However, in some cases the presence of three chromosomes can occur. This is when we speak of “trisomy”. For example, when a case of Down’s syndrome occurs, it is because the baby was born with three chromosomes 21, instead of the usual pair. Other cases of trisomy are trisomy 18 and trisomy 13. Trisomy 18 and trisomy 13, on the other hand, give rise to genetic disorders that present a series of birth defects. For example, babies born with three chromosomes 18 or 13 suffer from mental retardation and health problems that put every organ in their body at risk.

Unfortunately, most of these children die within a year of birth. Only a few babies with trisomy 18 and 13 survive for up to a year of life and, exceptionally, some have reached adolescence, although precise predictions about the life expectancy of these children cannot be made.
