Elections to elect councilors in Ompundja, a town in Namibia, arrived on the world stage for a very particular fact: the winning candidate is called Adolf Hitler.

The politician won with 85% of the vote in the district of only 4000 inhabitants which belongs to the region of Oshana. And he announced that his political doctrine was nothing like that of the dictator. “I am not coming to rule the world”, he warned.

Adolf Hitler Uunona – his full name – is 54 years old and was recently elected advisor to Namibia’s regional convention by the South West African People’s Organization (SWAPO), the country’s ruling party.

It was his father who decided to call him that, and Hitler claims he “probably did not understand what the Nazi leader stood for.” “When I was a kid, my name was something normal. Growing up, I realized that I was named after a man who wanted to subjugate the whole world. Well I have nothing to do with any of the things he did, ”the new adviser said in an interview with the German newspaper. picture.

Hitler often appears in public as Adolf Uunona and says his wife simply calls him Adolf, which is quite common in Namibia. Asked about the possibility of changing his name, he replies: “Now? It’s on all official records. It’s too late”.

Another striking detail was a photo that circulated on Twitter where a car is seen on the streets of Oshana with the inscription “Adolf Hitler” and a swastika on its rear window. Hitler assures us that the vehicle does not belong to him and that he does not know its owner either.

SWAPO, the party to which Adolf Hitler Uunona belongs, was founded in 1960 and originally adopted the doctrine Marxist-Leninist. After coming to power, it became an ideologically diverse force, oriented towards the center-left.

At a party congress in 2017, SWAPO formally defined itself as a socio-democratic party. Despite being a multiracial space, the Ovambo ethnic group has maintained a dominant influence in the party since its founding. However, Hage Geingob, who had been President of the Republic since 2015, became the first party leader not belonging to this ethnic group.

In 1972, the United Nations General Assembly recognized SWAPO as the “ sole legitimate representative ” of the Republic of Namibia, known as German South West Africa until its independence in 1990.
