On Monday, the Executive Secretariat of the National System of Public Security (SESNSP) revealed the figures of the homicides registered in April, which show that the the rate of violence in Mexico has increased in the first quarter of this year, compared to 2018.
Although April has been up to now the month with the fewer murders, the decline is not large enough to deviate from the trend, which puts 2019 as the most violent year in the country's history since the beginning of the statistical surveys in 1997.
Indeed, the month of April had fewer intentional homicides compared to 2018recording 2,716. According to the Executive Secretariat, this represents a reduction of 4.5% over the previous month and 1.7% compared to April of the previous year. However, compared to 2017, crime increased by 24.3% and even 64.7% compared to 2016.
During this month, on average 93.06 people are killed every day, the lowest figure since the beginning of Tabasco's mandate. But between 11,221 intentional killings were recorded between January and April; the sum makes it the most violent four-month period in the history of Mexico.
In addition, data from the SESNSP showed that the first five months of government of López Obrador A total of 14,510 voluntary homicides were recorded.
