In the opposite direction to what the letter from Cristina Fernández de Kirchner raised, Horacio Rodriguez Larreta he demanded to deal with macroeconomics. The head of government of Buenos Aires shared his thoughts at an international meeting called Back to BA, one of the spaces his figure will roam in the near future, seeking to establish himself as president, both at the national level than international. “The current macroeconomics in Argentina are worrying”Larreta said during this meeting, and among the issues he mentioned, the economy “is closed” and with many regulations. The same objections that were made to the government of Mauricio Macri, which deregulated and opened up imports with the consequences that were observed between 2015 and 2019.

Larreta appeared at a meeting which was mainly focused on the discussion of tourism in the city of Buenos Aires, but where he also left some definitions of the economy, which are in line with the proposal he made the week before PASO, when he declared that we must tend to abolish severance pay. In both cases, he seeks to present a profile “Market friendly” in front of national and international businessmen.

This meeting was called like that, in English, Back to BA (which should be read “bi ei”) and which evokes the idea of ”returning to Buenos Aires”, was organized by the English magazine The Economist with participants from the United States, Spain, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany and Latin America. It was a tourism-focused streaming event, but when interviewed by interviewer Robert Wood, Larreta left a few points of his take on the national economy.

“The current macroeconomics in Argentina are worrying. I am optimistic in the medium and long term, but now we are facing a big problem, ”remarked the head of government, who also replied in English. He did not develop too much what he considers to be the problems, but he said he saw that Argentina’s economy “is closed, has many regulations and is not functioning”. The diagnosis is the same as before the arrival of Macri to the Executive, which worked to deregulate capital flows and open up imports, in addition to taking on debt at a sustained rate. Larreta said that in the country “there are many opportunities at the general level” and more if the triumph of the opposition is confirmed “in the midterm elections”.

The rest of the time, Larreta offered his eyes to tourism in the city: he recalled that he had opened activities at a constant rate in search of tourist markets in the process of recovery. “The City has almost all activities open as before the pandemic, with the exception of large events such as parties or discos which are still prohibited. On a daily basis, we have restaurants, bars and public transport that operate almost normally, ”he noted. AND questioned that the national government does not allow the entry of international tourists. He said he wanted to recover the flow of tourists that the City had before the pandemic, which his secretary general, Fernando Straface, has supported. In addition to the head of government, there were panels with tour operators and companies related to the sector.

But that won’t be the only thing the head of government plans to do to position his figure. That same month he planned a tour of the United States, where he will meet officials from the World Bank, IDB and with members of the Climate Change Office, chaired by John Kerry. There, he will also set the stage for the C40 Mayors’ Summit, to be held in Buenos Aires next year. At the end of October, Larreta will travel to Scotland for COP26, the summit on climate change. And in December, he will make another tour of Europe, where he hopes to see the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez Almeida (of the Right People’s Party), as well as that of Paris, Anne Hidalgo; that of Rome, Virginia Raggi, and that of Berlin, Michael Müller.
