Terrified of dying from Covid, a woman stabbed to death his 5 year old daughter because he thought the baby couldn’t live without her.
Sutha Sivanantham, 36, stabbed her daughter Sayagi Sivanantham 15 times in the bedroom of her apartment in Mitcham, a suburb of south London, UK. Then he buried the knife in his own abdomen.
The woman had been complaining of various aches and pains for almost a year and Suganthan Sivanantham, her husband, believes fear of the virus and containment restrictions have pushed her to the limit.
“I think they may have had a negative effect on his well-being. She took the restrictions seriously and was petrified of contracting the virus“The man in the dock was sobbing during the trial.
Sivanantham does not speak English and has lived in the UK since 2006, after an arranged marriage with her husband. He described her as “a very good mother”. However, in 2019 he started complaining of mysterious pains and by the summer of the following year, in the midst of the pandemic, he complained of dizziness and weight loss.

Prosecutor Bill Emlyn-Jones said: “The accused had developed a morbid concern that she was suffering from a serious undiagnosed illness. She seemed convinced that she was going to die”. Hospital tests revealed that Sivanantham had been infected with Covid at some point.
The day before the murder, the woman had specifically asked her husband if he would look after the children if he died, the prosecutor said. And she added: “On the morning of June 30, 2020, she asked her husband not to go to work, but he explained that he had to leave, leaving the accused at home.”
Sivanantham phoned his friends that day to complain about his health, but they thought it was normal.
At around 4 p.m., they heard strange noises in their apartment. “They found the accused on the ground, with a serious stab wound in the abdomen“said Emlyn-Jones.

The mother and daughter were taken to hospital by helicopter, but Sayagi was pronounced dead on arrival. She had been stabbed 15 times and two of the wounds stabbed her heart.
At the hospital, Sivanantham told a doctor how terrified she was of being about to die. He also said that on the day of the murder she had felt like sleeping and dreaming; she knew she was hurting herself “but I didn’t realize I was hurting her”.
She was accused of murder on September 11, 2020 and justice found two letters: in one, she asked for forgiveness and assured that she “did not know what happened that day”.
Sivanantham was hospitalized for several months for her abdominal injury. A psychiatrist claimed that social isolation and stress caused by the Covid shutdown contributed to his severe mental illness.

“At the time of the alleged crimes, Ms. Sivanantham’s mental state appears to have been dominated by delusional hypochondriac and therefore abnormal beliefs. His behavior and decision making were strongly influenced by the content of his psychotic belief, ”a doctor said at the trial.
“However, in my opinion, she probably knew the basic nature and quality of her actions at the time of the assault, and she knew what she was doing was wrong,” he added.
Sivanantham has denied the murder of his daughter, but admitted homicide on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
Her husband has not spoken to her again, but accepts that she is not responsible for his actions. “I know that if this had happened I could not have killed our daughter,” he said.
Sivanantham was sentenced to a indefinite hospital arrest warrant during the hearing.
