A mother in the United States has been accused of murder her 4 year old daughter by forcing her to stand for three days followed as punishment, causing him to die of exhaustion.
Malikah Bennett, 31, is charged with child abuse and first degree murder in the 2020 death of Majelic “Jelly” Young. The baby was last seen alive at the end of August 2020; reported missing in September; and his remains were found buried outside a house in Charlotte, North Carolina, in May 2021.
Bennett and daughter’s grandmother Tammy Moffett, 53, were arrested after giving volunteer interviews with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Moffett was charged with concealing human remains and being an accomplice in the murder after the fact.
“I have worked in the homicide field for most of the past 10 years and I can tell you that this case is deeply troublingLt. Bryan Crum said at a press conference earlier this year.
“It’s disturbing for everyone who worked there. Crime scene investigators, detectives, everyone involved in this case; many of us are parents, and it is very difficult to understand how someone could do this to your child, kill your child and bury him and go on living his life as if nothing had happened”.
Some of these disturbing details have now been revealed. According to local media, the girl’s body was found after a phone call made to the police by a social worker. Bennett has previously faced relatively minor child neglect charges relating to two of his other children.
The recently issued warrants are said to contain the testimony of Majelic’s 13-year-old sister. The so-called teenager told police her younger sister was essentially punished to death by being forced to stand in the laundry room as punishment.

The girl was not allowed to sit down; he couldn’t leave either. Majelic’s sister said at the end of the first day her little sister had a saddle inside her pants. The abuse of permanent torture reportedly continued for another two days.
In interviews with police, the teenager said her sister’s breathing was difficult, intermittent on the third day when Majelic eventually became so weak that he fell out the back door and hit his head on the ground. It was the day she died.
The older sister later said her mother put the dead girl in two plastic bags where her body probably started to decompose inside the trunk of her truck for five days. Then the mother would have forced the teenager to help him dig a hole and cover the girl’s body with dirt.
Police say they recovered a shovel from the residence where Majelic’s body was found nine months later.
“Really seeing the search warrant hurt me,” said family friend Lucille Puckett, who described the boy’s death as “torture”.
“I don’t see it just happening to Jelli,” Puckett continued. “We don’t know how many children are lost in the system or might have faced the same situation.”
