All states nationwide have reported high community transmission, according to federal data; while Hospitalizations also reached their highest level in six months: Around 9,300 patients are admitted each day, the highest number of seeking care since April 2020.

Per capita pediatric admissions linked to Covid-19 are also at their highest rate during the pandemic, took over the press agency ANSA.

The state with the most impact is Florida, according to an analysis of state-level data from the El Nuevo Herald newspaper. Coronavirus hospitalizations in that state have broken daily records for 10 consecutive days, based on data released daily by the Federal Department of Health and Social Services.

The so-called sunshine state has also broken records for new single-day cases four times in the past two weeks.

Unlike past peaks, where the elderly were the most severe cases, this new wave is increasingly affecting young people. The number of children hospitalized in Florida was among the two worst in the country.

“This Delta variant sweeps and infects many people very quickly”warned Jason Salemi, an epidemiologist at the University of South Florida, who has been tracking disease data in the state since the start of the pandemic.

Salemi also attributes the significant increase in the number of people in Florida who are not vaccinated (around 8 million who are eligible to do so), to the relaxation of measures that reduce the likelihood of transmission, to the summer heat which brings people to focus on air-conditioned confined spaces and the growing tourism in the state.
