Since then, the Catalan police -the Mossos d’Esquadra- and the national police have been looking for him by scanning the Montjuic district and the surroundings of Barcelona’s El Prat airport where, according to the version of a taxi driver who claims to be left him at Terminal 1, all trace is lost.

Hotel security cameras, however, recorded the moment Alvarez leaves the room, where later the body of her two-year-and-nine-month-old son will be found under the bed. He would have murdered him to punish his wife, from whom he had separated, at will, a few days ago.

“You are going to regret it”, threatened her when she left the apartment in Arizala Street that they shared in the Sants Badal district of Barcelona.

From what the police later learned, he also intimidated her by saying that he would kill himself.

Alvarez’s last message to his ex was heartbreaking: “I’ll leave you at the hotel what you deserve,” he wrote.

The woman alerted the police and ran to the hotel, but the pediatric ambulance that came to rescue the baby was unable to save him.

When the ambulance arrived, Alvarez was no longer there. The hotel’s parking lot overlooks a triangular square, the 1714 Plaça del Setge, where Bodega Linares guests drink al fresco in these last days of European summer.

“I was inside the premises but two boys who were outside saw him hanging from the balconies of the building next to the hotel,” said the owner of the cellar, a Paraguayan who is in Spain for 18 years.
