An impressive snowstorm, coast-to-coast in the United States, painted the country white, leaving at least 2.5 million people without electricity, canceling flights and making road conditions very dangerous.

Are at least 46 weather alert states where residents are urged to avoid leaving their homes. Starting tomorrow, a second cold front would arrive, passing from the northeast (states like Washington and Oregon) to the southeast of the country. For the moment, the worst consequences have been observed in completely frozen states like Oklahoma, in the Northern Great Lakes region – with Chicago completely turned to ice – and Texas, which usually does not have such low temperatures and therefore its electrical service system collapsed. According to the national weather service, more than 150 million inhabitants are affected by extreme temperatures.

Scenes from Trucks skidding on highways, dozens of cars crammed into crashes or blurry streets with snow are repeated across the country. The meteorological service published a statement on its website this morning in which it warned that “the time to prepare for this storm was yesterday”, a strict request to avoid travel.

Records broken

This morning, more than 11 inches of snow had fallen in Seattle, with the lowest temperatures on record in Minnesota peaking at -46 degrees Celsius.

“It was the most snow and the lowest temperatures we have seen in Texas in history.”Governor Greg Abbot told reporters, who declared a state of emergency in the 254 counties in his region.

According to PowerOutage.us, at least two million people are still without power in Texas, and there are approximately 300,000 homes in Oregon and 150,000 in Virginia.

The extreme conditions are due to a high pressure system originating from the Arctic Circle. After hauling a lot of snow to the northeastern mountains and valleys, Oregon and Washington, it continued to the southern plains. Conditions are expected to be severe early in the morning in the northeast of the country.

In cities like Oklahoma today experiences a temperature 40 degrees below average for this time of year. Temperatures are expected to drop below 20 degrees below zero over the next nine days.

Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas have activated the National Guard to deal with the aftermath of this winter storm.

Flight cancellations and empty routes

Only this sunday 2,388 flights have been canceled in the country and on Monday there are already more than 2,600 suspended -although over the hours, the number may increase-.

Drivers across the country are being asked not to go out unless it is extremely urgent.

The Texas Highway Patrol reported several crashes, including one of 25 vehicles in the western state that forced part of Interstate 20 to close.

“Everyone in the state must have collective goals in the days to come. One of them should be not to repeat what happened in Fort Worth, ”Gov. Abbot said of the massive car crash that involved 100 vehicles last week in Texas. that the roads were starting to freeze.

For its part, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol has also closed several routes, due to ice, and reported multiple vehicle accidents.
