Most are members of humble families, who could not afford the firewood to cremate the body.

“The bodies ended up in the river and are floating in the water,” explains a neighbor in the neighborhood.

Most of India’s nearly 400,000 COVID deaths were cremated, but many poor families could not afford the firewood needed for traditional Hindu cremations.
Authorities have launched a race against time to cremate the remains and prevent further outbreaks.
