Incidents at protest against pandemic restrictions in Germany

German police and protesters oppose restrictions in place to stem coronavirus pandemic faced this Saturday in the city of Kassel, in central Germany.

Law enforcement agencies used pepper spray when a group of people tried to cross a police cordon to join another group of demonstrators.

Several thousand people, most without masks, gathered in the city to show their displeasure with the measures applied by the authorities to reduce infections.

The protest was called by the so-called ‘Querdenker’, or lateral thinkers movement, which brings together those who see the restrictive measures against the pandemic as unjustified. Under this label are extremists on the left, on the right, adhering to conspiracy theories and anti-vaccines.

Some of the attendees held up banners reading “Enough containment” and “Corona rebels”, as well as flags bearing the slogan “Querdenker”.

The founder of the movement, Michael Ballweg, asked his supporters at the end of December to stop the protests until spring.

According to the organizers, the demonstration in Kassel attracted 6,000 people. Last weekend, other smaller demonstrations took place in other German cities.

Weekly incidence in Germany is close to 100, with 16,033 new infections

The maximum number of infections was reached on December 18 with 33,777 new infections in one day and that of deaths on January 14 with 1,244.

The weekly reproduction factor is 1.18, which means that every 100 infected infect an average of 118 other people.
