India surpassed 25 million cases of coronavirus on Tuesday since the start of the pandemic, despite the drop in infections in recent days, the same day he recorded a new record of 4,329 deaths.

Infections totaled 263,533 in the past 24 hours, according to data from India’s Ministry of Health, the lowest number in a month after India hit records of more than 400,000 daily cases two weeks ago , in the midst of a second virulent wave of the virus that collapsed the healthcare system.

This decline contrasts with the death toll, which has now reached a new record since the start of the pandemic and, last week, they stayed close or hit over 4,000 a day.

With these new figures, the number of covid-19 infections now stands at 25.2 million (second country in the world, behind the United States) and the total deaths at 278,719 (third, after the United States and Brazil).

India recorded fewer than 300,000 cases for the second day in a row and the smallest increase in infections in a month, a gradual decline after reaching a record high of over 400,000 infections two weeks ago.

While the downward data is encouraging, against the backdrop of a virulent second wave of the pandemic that has caused a health collapse and a lack of oxygen for medical use and beds, experts warn that official figures do not show the reality of the pandemic and that the number of deaths could be several times higher.

Faced with this situation, the one dubbed “the largest vaccination campaign in the world” remains considered the main way out of this health crisis.

Asian country administered 1.5 million vaccines in the past 24 hours, as part of this program which began last January and extended to the entire Indian population over 18 in May.

The number of inoculations now stands at 184 million, although the rate remains lower than expected and just over 3% of the population has received the two doses of AstraZeneca’s Covishield, which is made by the Serum Institute of India (SII), or Covaxin, from the Indian laboratory Bharat Biotech, to which is added the imported Russian vaccine Sputnik V.

VSeveral states have denounced the shortage of vaccines, despite the Indian government ensuring that there are sufficient doses. New Delhi announced on Monday that it will have to stop vaccinations among the population between the ages of 18 and 44 for this reason.
