India reported nearly 4,000 new coronavirus deaths after examination: actual death toll could be much higher than official

The Indian government has notified this Wednesday about 4,000 deaths from the coronavirus, a figure about ten times higher than the day before, following a new review of death data from the state of Maharashtra, the epicenter of the second wave between April and May.

The excess mortality figure compared to a normal year may serve as a reflection of the impact of the pandemic in the country, although not all deaths can be attributed with certainty directly to the coronavirus. Despite this, many experts have warned that the death toll could be much higher than the official figure.

Last month India’s health ministry attacked The Economist magazine for claiming in an article that excess mortality was between five and seven times the official rate.

The ministry noted that the article was “speculative” and “misinformed”.
