According to preliminary calculations, a powerful magnitude 6.8 earthquake rocked Indonesia's Sulawesi islands in Sulawesi on Friday. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake at 1:40 am Pacific time, 102 km south-southwest of Luwuk (54,000). According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 17 kilometers under the seabed of Banda.

At around 14:00, a tsunami warning was issued and residents of central areas of the archipelago were ordered to evacuate, according to the Indonesian Geophysical Agency. The balance sheets of the victims have not yet been made public. The spokesman of the agency, Taufan Maulana, said that "clearly", the earthquake "is likely to cause tsunamis".
