Just today Instagram announced the changes it will make to improve privacy and create a safe experience for people under 16 while giving them everything they love on this platform.
The changes they will make today include:
- Young by default on private accounts (automatic if under 16).
- This makes it more difficult for potentially suspicious accounts to find young people.
- Limit the options advertisers have for reaching young people with ads.
Pre-targeting of people under 16 on private accounts
From this week, anyone under 16 (or under 18 in some countries) will automatically log into a private account upon joining Instagram. For young people who already have a public account in Instagram, they’ll show you a notification highlighting the benefits of a private account and explaining how to change your privacy settings.
They will continue to give young people the option of switching to a public account or keeping their public checking account if they wish. Recent corporate research has shown that young people value a more private experience. In testing, eight out of ten teens accepted the default private settings during registration.
Stop unwanted contacts
Not only will they encourage young people to have private accounts, but their profiles will be hard to find for potentially suspicious adults. They have developed technology that allows them to identify recently blocked or youth-reported adult-owned accounts and prevent those accounts from interacting with those of minors.
In addition, with this technology, they will not display youth accounts on Explore, Reels or “Suggested Accounts for You” to these adults. If they found youth accounts by looking up their usernames, they wouldn’t be able to track them. They will also not be able to see young people’s comments on other people’s posts or leave comments on their posts.
Changing the way advertisers can reach young people
After a few weeks, previously available targeting options, such as those based on interests or your activity on other apps and websites, will no longer be available to advertisers. These changes will be global and will apply to Instagram, Facebook Yes Messenger.
Instagram It already offers people the option of not seeing ads based on their interests or activities on other websites and apps, but they feel that young people may not be well equipped to make those decisions.
