This is the first network of underwater tunnels to be extended to cover the Faroe Islands.

The lowest point of the tunnel called Eysturoy it is 189 meters below the sea.

The connection will shorten the distance between the town of Tórshavn – the capital of the islands – and the towns of Runavík and Strendur. The difference will become 55 to 17 kilometers thanks to the construction.

The works include two tunnels that will connect the sides of Skalafjordur bay, which are linked to a roundabout below the seabed in the middle of the bay.

The place, illuminated in different colors, was designed by artist Trondur Patursson.

The other tunnel to be inaugurated will connect Sandoy Island to much of the infrastructure in the Faroe Islands. Its construction began in 2018 and it is estimated that work will be completed in 2023, as reported RT.
