This Wednesday, Italian television broadcast previously unseen footage of the fall of the Stresa cable car, on the shores of Lake Maggiore, which killed 14 people on May 23.

In the video, broadcast by Italian media Tg3, You can see how the car slowly climbs up and when it’s about to reach the Mottarone platform, it stops and starts a reverse movement on the cable, at full speed, then falls into the void. The impact against the ground was not recorded by the cameras because it occurred behind the relief of the mountain.

In a second video, shot from inside the station, the manager can be seen ready to greet passengers by opening the doors for them. However, at that moment, the cable broke, the cabin fell and the man ran to call for help.

The two recordings are currently being examined by the Verbania prosecutor’s office, which is analyzing the abnormal presence of an emergency brake deactivation device.

14 people died in the incident. The only survivor was a five year old boy, that he was released on June 10 and was orphaned after the death of his parents and brother.

How the investigation continues

Three people were arrested for this act: the head of the service, Gabriele Tadini, the operational director, Enrico Perocchio, and the owner of the company “Ferrovie del Mottarone” which manages the cable car, Luigi Nerini.

All are accused of multiple intentional homicides, negligent disaster and removal of tools to prevent accidents at work, local media reported.

However, a few days later, they were released on parole and are currently under house arrest. Tadini assured investigators “all the fault is his” and that “now it is his turn to make peace with God”.

The popular tourist cable car connects the village of Stresa with Mount Mottarone in 20 minutes, which reaches almost 1,500 meters and offers spectacular views of the Alps and Lake Maggiore.

The cable car was closed between 2014 and 2016 for maintenance work. Lake Maggiore, between Switzerland and Italy, is one of the most popular destinations for Italian and foreign tourists.
