Italy receives first batch of coronavirus vaccines

Italy today received the first 9,750 doses of coronavirus vaccine produced by the American company Pfizer with which the vaccination campaign will begin nationwide on Sunday, December 27.

Vaccines entered the country in a refrigerated truck escorted by the military across the northern border, then they will be distributed to the 300 vaccination points that the government has set up across the country, state broadcaster RAI reported.

On Sunday, a 29-year-old nurse from the Spalanzani hospital in the capital Rome will be the first to receive the vaccination to launch the national campaign.

Italy remains from yesterday and until Sunday in a “red zone” situation at the national level, with which the government seeks to limit internal travel to avoid a possible third wave of Covid-19 after the holidays.

In this context, The Department of Health today reported 19,037 infections of the coronavirus, although with a positivity rate of 12.4%, an increase from the last few days.

To date, 71,359 people, including 459 in the past 24 hours, have died across Italy since the start of the pandemic.
