"Reiwa" is the name of the Naruhito era and can be translated as "beautiful harmony". It is formed by the characters "Rei", which means beautiful and "wa", which means harmony.

The name has been extracted from Manyoshu, the oldest anthology of Japanese poems, compiled about 1200 years ago.
